The Parasite – Arthur Conan Doyle: 52 in 52 Book #12

The Parasite

Now earlier in my challenge I read A Study in Scarlet, after which I did some research on the author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I discovered one of his other stories and decided to see whether it measured up to Mr Holmes.

The Parasite details the experiences of Professor Austin Gilroy who comes under the influence of a psychic known as Miss Penclosa. Miss Penclosa is a West Indian woman with a crippled leg and who slowly gains control over Austin. After spurning her affections, Miss Penclosa wreaks havoc on Austin’s life by forcing him to commit humiliating and heinous acts without his knowledge.

It is an interesting plot, especially if you are used to the escapades of Mr Holmes. It is short, with my copy barely breaking the eighty page mark but in those pages is a horrifically interesting tale. You feel for Austin as he is subjected to this woman’s powers and wrath and read on in anticipation of what will happen next.

If you like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s other works then this is definitely worth a look. I bought a physical copy for less than £2 but it can be found online for free as an e-book with a quick search. It shows Conan Doyle’s writing style in a different and refreshing way and was an enjoyable, if brief, read.
